Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The text has 1.5 line spacing; a font size of 12 points; the font is Times New Roman or similar; italics are used instead of underlining (except for URLs); the pages are numbered; the lines are numbered; and all illustrations, figures and tables are placed in the appropriate places within the text, rather than at the end.
  • The submission file must be in OpenOffice (.odp), Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), RTF (.rtf), WordPerfect (.wpd), or LaTeX (.tex) format.

Author Guidelines

Scope of articles and review process

The *Revista Estadística Aplicada* publishes original, unpublished articles in Spanish and English. The subject areas covered are Applied Statistics and the development of tools for the application of statistics.

 

Review process

This journal employs a peer-review process; authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the entire process. Each article is reviewed by a minimum of two reviewers. The reviewers’ comments and recommendations are a key factor in the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript; however, the editorial team is responsible for the final decision to publish or reject an article and for notifying the corresponding author.

Authors have a period of 15 days to return the article revised in accordance with the reviewers’ recommendations.

 

Guidelines for the presentation and submission of texts

For an article to be considered for publication, it must comply with the following general guidelines and then with the specific guidelines depending on the type of contribution; for example, the maximum word count varies according to the type of contribution. However, under no circumstances should references be included.

Title. This should reflect the content of the text and be informative; it must not exceed 15 words.

Abstract. This should provide specific information. It should summarise, outline and prioritise the content, and should be between 200 and 300 words depending on the type of contribution.

Keywords. Between 3 and 5.

Text format. The text must be formatted in Arial, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing. There should be no indentation or automatic spacing between paragraphs. Pages must be numbered, as must lines, in continuous sequence. Headings must be in bold. Do not number headings and subheadings. Section headings in CAPITAL LETTERS and subheadings in lower case and italics.

In all cases, the bibliography must follow the APA style guide, 2027 edition.

 

General guidelines and guidelines for each type of submission

The Journal of Applied Statistics accepts submissions in the form of research articles, short communications, methodological articles, reviews, book reviews and short biographies. Other formats may be accepted subject to the editorial board’s approval.

A research article must be an original piece of work, structured into an Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion. The abstract should be between 150 and 300 words. The text must not exceed 6,000 words. A maximum of 3 tables and 4 figures may be included.

A short communication is a concise manuscript designed to publish original, innovative and timely results quickly. It must not exceed 3,500 words, and figures and/or tables are limited to a maximum of four. Short communications are reviewed on the basis of their significant contribution to the current field and their technical soundness.

A methodological article is a short original article describing a new procedure or method, or alternatively variations on existing methods or new applications. A sufficiently comprehensive explanation of the techniques, procedures, materials or equipment required to develop this methodology must be provided. Authors are encouraged to provide code and a dataset (test or pilot sample) deposited in an open data repository to facilitate its use by the scientific community.

A literature review is expected to be a detailed study that compiles, analyses and summarises the existing literature on a specific topic, critically evaluating previous studies to identify gaps in knowledge, without presenting the author’s own findings.

A book review is expected to include a critical analysis rather than merely a summary, and to consider the originality, structure and applications of the work. The text should be between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length. The book should be contextualised, and its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its contribution to the field of study, should be discussed.

A short biography should be no longer than 2,000 words and include no more than two figures. It is recommended that it be written in the third person. It should include the subject’s full name, background, key achievements, and links to their academic work and social media profiles.

Sections

  1. Research Article

    A research article must be an original piece of work, structured into an Introduction, Methodology, Results and Discussion. The abstract should be between 150 and 300 words. The text must not exceed 6,000 words. A maximum of 3 tables and 4 figures may be included.

    Introduction. This should include specific background information and details of the process, a list of objectives, and the significance of the topic.

    Materials and Methods. A description of the methods and procedures used to obtain the results presented. Analyses carried out, software used.

    Results. Presentation and expression of the results in tables and figures.

    Discussion. This should follow the order of presentation or the order of importance of the results. The contribution of the work in relation to prior knowledge should be clearly defined and distinguished.

    Acknowledgements. A brief acknowledgement of those who collaborated in the production of the article and/or enabled the research to be carried out.

    References and in-text citations. References to the bibliographic material consulted for the preparation of the article. Following the APA style guide, 2026 edition.

  2. Book Review

    A book review is expected to include a critical analysis rather than merely a summary; it should consider the work’s originality, structure and applications. The text should be between 1,000 and 3,000 words in length. The book must be placed in context, and its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its contribution to the field of study, must be discussed.

    Structure: Title, reference details (author, title, publisher, year, ISBN, APA 7th edition), introduction, main body and conclusions.

    References must follow the style guidelines (APA 7th edition).

     

  3. Short Biography

    A short biography should not exceed 2,000 words and 2 figures. It is recommended that it be written in the third person. Please include the person’s full name, background, key achievements, and links to their social media profiles and academic publications.

    Suggested structure

    Introduction: Introduce the person and their area of expertise or main impact.

    Main body: Describe key milestones, works and/or professional career.

    Conclusion: Summarise their legacy, current impact or present situation.

    References must follow the style guidelines (APA 7th edition).

  4. Short Communication

    A short communication is a concise manuscript designed to publish original, innovative and timely results quickly. It must not exceed 3,500 words, and there must be no more than four figures and/or tables.

    Structure:

    Title and Abstract: An informative title and a brief abstract of no more than 200 words highlighting the aim and main findings.

    Introduction

    Results and Discussion

    References: maximum 20, prioritising recent literature (last 5 years).

    Short communications are reviewed on the basis of their significant contribution to the current field and their technical soundness.

  5. Literature Review

    A literature review is expected to be a detailed study that compiles, analyses and synthesises the existing literature on a specific topic, critically evaluating previous studies to identify gaps in knowledge, without presenting the author’s own findings.

    Structure

    Title, abstract (250 words), introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusions and references.

  6. Methodological Article

    A methodological article is a short original article describing a new procedure or method, or alternatively, variations on existing methods or new applications. A sufficiently comprehensive explanation of the techniques, procedures, materials or equipment required to implement this methodology must be provided. Authors are encouraged to provide code and a dataset (test or pilot sample) deposited in an open data repository to facilitate its use by the scientific community. It should not exceed 5,000 words.

Copyright Notice

Authors grant permission for their work to be published for the first time. The work, or part thereof, may subsequently be published elsewhere in accordance with the rights to share the original work, provided that it is made clear that it has already been published in the Journal of Applied Statistics, with the relevant citation.
